All barcode scanners must have an ID. The ID is a three digit number that signifies the main function of the scanner and what the program is to do when the scanner scans a barcode. Scanner associations are set in the Scanner Rules form ID - 000 to 099
Scanners with an ID from 000 to 099 are Roaming Scanners. They can scan a job into or out of any process or department.
They, unlike the departmental or process scanners require you to scan the job, scan an instruction code, then scan the department or process name. The bar codes for all departments, processes and instruction codes are printed using the Print Bar Codes button at the bottom of the Scanner Rules form.
The instruction code can be 'In', 'Out' or 'Hold'. A Roaming Scanner will ignore the Scan In and Scan Out check boxes on the Scanner Rules form.
ID - 100 to 199.
Scanners with an ID in the 100's are committed at the department level. On the Resource / Production Department Tables form the scanner ID is associated with one department. When a job is scanned with this scanner the job will be moved according to the rules setup in the Scanner Rules form.
If Step Through Processes is checked the job will move through every process that has been chosen for that job in that department. For example if the job is in the Bindery department and it is scheduled for Cutting then Laminating, the job will have Cutting assigned as it's current location as soon as it is scanned into that department. When scanning it the next time the job will move to Laminating. When Laminating is complete the next scan will move it out of Bindery.
On the other hand, if Complete All Processes is checked, the same job will show up in Cutting in the Bindery department as soon as it enters Bindery. The next time it is scanned it will show up in the next department signifying that the job has completed all bindery operations.
ID - 200 to 299
Scanners with an ID in the 200's are committed at the process level. On the Resource / Production Department Tables form the scanner ID is associated with one process which could be in any department. When a job is scanned with this scanner the job will be moved according to the rules setup in the Scanner Rules form.
The Step Through Processes and Complete All Processes check boxes have no meaning here. If the job above is scanned by the scanner associated with Cutting it will be moved in or out of Cutting only. Another scanner will be needed to get it out of Laminating. If this is the only scanner with a process association in the Bindery department and the Bindery department has a department level scanner with Step Through Processes checked the department level scanner can move the job through Cutting.
Scan In / Scan Out
If the Scan In rule is checked the job will be scanned INTO the process or department associated with the scanner and it will be the current location. If the Scan Out rule is checked the job will be scanned OUT OF the area associated with the scanner and the area will be complete. If both Scan In and Scan Out are checked the program will look at the current location of the job and if it is not in the area associated with the scanner, it will be moved into the area. If the job is currently in the area associated with the scanner it will be moved out of the area and will mark it complete. If the next area is not defined with the Scan In check box, the job will be moved to that area and it will be the current location. If the next area is defined with the Scan In check box, the next area will not be the current location but will show as staged for that area. The difference between staged and current location is seen on the WIP report.
