Step and Repeat for Digital Printers

Step and Repeat is a method of distributing the Finished Size pages on a Run Size sheet.  It assumes that each page in will be placed "up" number of times on a sheet to produce "copies" number of printed sheets.

If you have 4 pages or images, (A, B, C and D), and run them 10 up.  Page A will print in all 10 positions of the Run Size sheet, and print until the number of copies needed is produced.  Then page B will be printed.  All will be printed this way until all pages have produced the number of required copies.  If you have 6 pages, where 3 go on the front and 3 go on the back.  Also 2 of the front ones are color and one is B/W and all of the back pages are B/W.  You will enter these quantities into the appropriate fields under Front and Back.

The numbers you enter into Originals and Copies should reflect the finished product quantities and should be correct to communicate to the bindery options that operate on the finished size and quantity.

The number of sheets required for the job is determined by the number of copies required times the number of Run Size flats divided by the number up.  If the number of sheets is calculated wrong and you want to manually change it, you may change the number and lock it.  If you have 20 pages to produce 10 copies of 10 leafs printed on the front and back, it will require 100 sheets.  If you print them 2 up it will require 50 sheets.

The number of clicks for color and B/W is determined by the total front plus the total back times the number of copies required divided by the number up.

The click rate table for the selected printer is size adjusted. Break points for the printer are based on the base paper size.  Larger paper sizes will first determine how many base size sheets make up the job before going to the rate table.  So 10 sheets of 11 x 17 are the same as 20 at 8.5 x 11.
